“Canmore-raised and a BFA graduate of Emily Carr University of Art and Design(2017), Louis Trautman explores “borrowed Nostalgia”, layering imagery drawn from research and travel into cinematic, vintage-inspired compositions saturated with symbolism and muted colour, threaded with vaguely suggested narrative. Rooted in conceptual photography and shaped by a strong command of colour theory, his work translates the texture and visual language of the 60’s- 90’s into pointed commentary on contemporary culture.

Trautman’s work is held in collections across Canada and the United States. He is also a musician with indie-surf band Cave Arcade and works as a gallerist and preparator in Canmore.”

“Verses For A Changing World” 20x20 For “Noctalgia” On display until March 15 at Elevation Gallery Canmore A stack of National Geographic magazines depicted as they seem to always be. Never alone. It is for this reason I tend to think of the magazine as the entirely yellow bookshelf my parents had in my youth, or the yellow column a close friend had when we were kids. It sprouted from the carpet next to his bed and grew with each new annual subscription from his grandparents. When considered in this way, each issue’s contents which are listed on the spine become lines of a larger block of text or poem. If it is a poem, then each line a verse but also a chronicling of noteworthy articles for a given month and year. Whether, geopolitics, weather patterns, or our general understanding of our planet and beyond, the scope of the magazine’s coverage is broad. if we look back far enough we’re bound to find noticeable change. There are lines in this poem that refer to how humans may one day land on the moon, articles about space that predate the International Space Station or the Hubble telescope. There are also aspects of understanding we haven’t improved upon, endangered species, politics and environmental worries to name a few.
